In 2024, results from the People Matter Employee Survey showed that staff at Goulburn Hospital were feeling less engaged and supported, with metrics tracking below benchmarks in these important areas. This followed a period of significant change, including completion of the hospital's redevelopment, alongside workforce pressures.
In response, staff formed a wellbeing committee to improve the workplace in practical, meaningful ways. The approach focused on simple, staff-led actions. These included a peer recognition program with more than 320 nominations, shared activities such as “Brickman”, and regular events that brought teams together. Activities such as an ANZAC biscuit competition and a “Soup-er Solstice” event created connection and showed care in everyday practice.
The impact has extended beyond the hospital through strong social media engagement and partnerships with community organisations supporting local health initiatives. This project shows how staff-led action, supported by leadership, can strengthen culture, improve connection, and create lasting change during periods of transition.
