The Journey: Building Culture and Capability for Safe, High-Quality Care

South Western Sydney Local Health District

Finalist: People and Culture Award

South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWSLHD) recognised that traditional safety and quality training was often delivered in separate programs, was role-specific, disconnected from staff wellbeing, and did not lead to lasting changes in practice.

To address this, SWSLHD developed 'The Journey', a district-wide program designed to build staff skills, consider wellbeing and create a positive safety culture. The Journey combines existing local and statewide safety and quality training, communities of practice, a dedicated faculty of safety and quality leaders, and structured development pathways. It encourages staff from different professions to work together, share ideas and lead improvements, while supporting psychological safety, staff wellbeing and co-design.

The program has delivered strong results. Hospital-acquired complications have significantly decreased, while compliments from patients and carers have increased and complaints have fallen. More than 70% of staff completed foundational safety and quality training, 42% of 12-month program graduates progressed into leadership roles, and a community of safety and quality leaders is supporting staff in their initiatives. By investing in workforce capability, wellbeing and leadership, SWSLHD has created lasting cultural change, helping staff to deliver safer, more reliable and person-centred care.
