What is the NSW Health Deployment Program?

We provide opportunities to travel and work at hospitals and health services that have a short-term need for your skills and experience.

We are seeking nurses, midwives and allied health professionals to fill short-term vacancies across regional, rural and remote NSW. We’ll cover your accommodation and travel costs and provide other incentives to ensure you’re well supported.

Whether you currently work for NSW Health, or are looking for a job with us, we can:

  • open career opportunities
  • bring variety and mobility into your working life
  • broaden your horizons with unique experiences
  • expand on your professional skillsets.

Is deployment work right for you?

You will have the opportunity to travel and work for different local health districts and speciality networks across NSW.

This might suit you if you are:

  • looking for a job that provides you the flexibility to travel and work
  • looking for new, different, and positive environments and experiences from your job
  • seeking a career break but don’t want to lose your professional skills
  • seeking opportunities for professional development and growth that might not be available in metropolitan areas
  • interested in being in places for short periods of time, with the opportunity to stay for longer
  • curious to know what a role or location is like but can’t commit to a permanent role.
If you are already a NSW Health employee, you can join the program with approval from your manager.

What type of work is available?

Full time and casual opportunities are available while on deployment. You will be required to work a roster to meet the needs of the facility. This may include shift work.

How long are the deployments?

Deployments can last two to 13 weeks. If the local health district would like you to continue after the deployment, they might offer you a temporary contract.

What about accommodation, meals, travel and incentives?

Your accommodation, travel (flights and care hire), meals and some out-of-pocket costs will be paid under the NSW Health Travel Policy. The travel start point is Sydney.

Will I accrue leave?

Full-time staff will accrue annual, sick and long-service leave as detailed in the NSW Health award and conditions.

How do we support our staff?

Our Workforce Operational Strategic Unit (WOSU) supports you with a range of resources, incentives, and programs to help you make the most of your deployment both personally and professionally.

You might also be able to access the Rural Health Workforce Incentive Scheme (RHWIS).

There are also supports available from the NSW Government:

The Welcome Experience | NSW Government This exciting new service provides essential government workers and their families with the support they need to move into regional communities. Settle in and become one of the locals.
