NSW Health acknowledges the community’s concerns, particularly in the Blue Mountains, about PFAS and its potential health impacts
In the interests of transparency, NSW Health agreed to facilitate a meeting to discuss methodological and design challenges associated with PFAS health studies.
This meeting took place on 16 December 2025 and included two US-based academics, who were nominated by STOP PFAS Blue Mountains, and two independent Australian academic epidemiologists.
Their discussion focused on how PFAS health studies are conducted and what characteristics are needed to run them effectively. Each participant contributed their individual expertise and open discussion was enabled.
To support ongoing transparency, NSW Health has published a summary of the meeting. All four epidemiologists have agreed the meeting summary is correct.
Following the meeting, NSW Health’s view remains that an epidemiological study in the Blue Mountains would not contribute positively to our understanding of PFAS or provide reliable information about a clinical effect caused by PFAS.
This view is in line with the advice from the NSW Health Expert Panel on PFAS.
To support ongoing transparency, NSW Health has published a summary of the 16 December 2025 meeting.
