NSW STI surveillance data

The NSW STI surveillance reports give an overview of sexually transmissible infections (STIs) in NSW. They include detailed data on five STIs, including gonorrhoea, infectious syphilis, lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV), and mpox among people living in NSW. Information on HIV infection notifications and data on individual diseases are reported separately.

STI notifications data are extracted from the NSW Notifiable Conditions Information Management System (NCIMS). Data are correct at the time of publication but are subject to change.

“Notifiable data" refers to information about certain diseases or conditions that must be reported to public health authorities by law. This helps track and manage outbreaks, ensuring timely public health responses to prevent the spread of these diseases.

Research

STI research enhances our understanding of how STIs spread and affect different populations, which is crucial for controlling outbreaks and protecting public health. Research provides the evidence needed to shape public health policies and allocate resources effectively, ensuring that interventions are based on the best available evidence.

  • The BBV & STI Research, Intervention, and Strategic Evaluation (BRISE) Program at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) is funded by NSW Health to deliver policy relevant research, strategic advice, capacity building and communications to support efforts to reduce the prevalence and impacts of blood borne viruses (BBVs) and STIs in NSW.
  • The Centre for Social Research in Health at UNSW Sydney undertakes national behavioural and social research on a wide range of health-related issues, with a focus on population groups most at risk of infection.
  • The Stigma Research Stream at the Centre for Social Research in Health documents and monitors the experiences and expression of stigma and discrimination targeted at people affected by BBVs and STIs.
  • The Kirby Institute at UNSW Sydney conducts National research on sexually transmissible infections (STIs), including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and syphilis.
  • The Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University conduct National research on sex and sexuality, track patterns over time, and undertake qualitative research of sexuality-related cultures, experiences and identities.
  • The Sexually Transmitted Infections Research Centre (STIRC) at the University of Sydney conducts national research in sexual health including projects in clinical, laboratory science, therapeutics and vaccines, epidemiology, behavioural research as well as translational research aimed at improving clinical services in sexual health.
