Recruitment and selection in the NSW Biostatistics Training Program

​​​​​​​Traineeships are awarded through a competitive merit selection process. Successful applicants are offered temporary full-time employment as a Trainee Biostatistician for a three-year period.

Conditions of employment

Trainee Biostatisticians are temporary full-time employees of the NSW Ministry of Health, appointed under Section 43 (1) (b) of the Government Sector Employment Act 2013. Appointments are renewable annually, subject to satisfactory performance.

Salary

Trainee Biostatisticians are employed at Crown Clerk Grade 7/8. Current salary rates for Crown employees can be found on the Rates of pay for Ministry of Health staff page. Trainees usually commence on the lowest salary rate and receive a salary increase upon the satisfactory completion of each year of employment. 

Eligibility

  • Applicants must meet the entry requirements for a Master of Biostatistics at the University of Sydney. This requires holding a bachelor's degree majoring in statistics, or an equivalent qualification, with at least a credit average (65%) maintained in this previous coursework study.
  • Applicants must have an aptitude for advanced mathematical work, a high-level knowledge of statistical concepts and methods, and extensive experience in the use of statistical software packages.
  • Applicants must be able to demonstrate competence in a number of capabilities outlined in the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework, including displaying resilience and courage, effective communication, ability to work collaboratively, influencing and negotiation, delivering results, and thinking and problem solving.
  • Applicants must:
    • ​be an Australian citizen, or a permanent resident, or
    • be a New Zealand citizen with a current New Zealand passport, or
    • hold a valid work visa that gives them permission to work in Australia for the duration of the traineeship.
