Finalist: Keeping People Healthy Award
The NSW Active Transport Health Model demonstrates the health benefits of active transport such as walking and cycling, to inform planning and decision-making for investment in active transport infrastructure in NSW. The physical and mental health benefits from increased active transport-related physical activity include reduced anxiety, depression and chronic diseases such as Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, respiratory conditions and some cancers. Health benefits from lower air pollution and reduced road trauma are also included, enabling in-depth health impact assessments.
Including health metrics in infrastructure planning promotes healthier, active communities, and contributes to government goals like sustainability, climate resilience, and urban liveability.
Endorsed by NSW Treasury and launched in December 2024, the Model is used across government to guide investment and embed health in planning decisions.
