Genomics and new genomic technology has the potential to transform patient care in the areas of

  • cancer
  • rare disease
  • population health
  • infectious disease and
  • microbiome (also known as gut health).

For example, genetic sequencing

  • allows inherited conditions to be identified with greater ease
  • enables cancerous tumours and new infectious pathogens to be characterised in detail so that diagnoses can be made accurately and treatment can be tailored to the patient,
  • broadens the range of pre-conception screening options.

The existing health workforce will take on many new tasks across the patient journey to seize the opportunities that the dynamic field of genomics presents.
