The NSW HIV support program (HSP) facilitates expert guidance and support to clinicians and people living with HIV across New South Wales. It ensures individuals newly diagnosed with HIV have timely access to medical care, accurate information, counselling, and ongoing support.
HSP supports clinicians with limited experience in HIV management by providing access to specialist advice, practical resources and referral pathways to HIV specialist services. The program is coordinated by Health Protection NSW (HPNSW) and delivered through Local Health District (LHD) coordinators.
The HSP is a state-wide program offered to clinicians following laboratory notification of a positive HIV test result.

Clinicians can indicate their preference for HSP at the time of laboratory notification. Clinicians requesting support are asked to provide a preferred contact date, timeframe, and contact phone number.
Clinicians can request support directly by contacting Health Protection NSW on 02 9391 9195 and request to speak with a HIV surveillance officer.
If HSP is requested following a positive HIV test result:
HSP requests are managed during business hours: Monday to Friday, 0830 – 1700hrs. If support is required outside of these hours, please contact HPNSW to discuss after-hours support arrangements.
