Family Referral Services are a whole-of-government initiative operating across NSW. Currently, there are 11 Family Referral Services in operation. They are delivered by non-government organisations under contract with NSW Health. Family Referral Services also operate in some NSW public schools providing additional support for students who are considered vulnerable.

Family Referral Services engage and assist vulnerable children, young people and families to access the support services they need to prevent escalation. They link families to a range of local support services, including case coordination, housing, parenting education, supported play-group, drug and alcohol/mental health services, youth support services and respite care. Family Referral Services also have a role in improving the knowledge of service providers about local support services in their catchment area, and strengthening coordination and collaboration.
