Additional services from Queensland-trained pharmacists – information for the community

Please note that is currently a limited number of pharmacists registered to provide these services in NSW.

Pharmacists who have completed Queensland-based university-level training can deliver some additional services in NSW, including management of:

  • Hormonal contraception resupply
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)
  • Minor skin conditions
  • Mild, acute musculoskeletal pain
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis
  • Acne
  • Acute nausea and vomiting

Who is eligible for treatment?

Specific eligibility criteria are in place to ensure patients receive safe and appropriate care. These requirements are particular to each condition:

  • Resupply of hormonal contraception, please refer to the Expanded scope pharmacy services – Information for the community.
  • Management of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs), please refer to theExpanded scope pharmacy services – Information for the community.
  • Management of mild, acute musculoskeletal pain, patients must be aged 18 years or older.
  • Management of gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD), patients must be aged between 18 and 50 years old (inclusive).
  • Management of allergic and non-allergic rhinitis, patients must be aged 6 years or older.
  • Management of acne, patients must be aged 12 years or older.
  • Management of acute nausea and vomiting, patients must be aged 18 years or older.

Additional eligibility criteria may apply to patients seeking community pharmacist management services, depending on their condition.

Finding a pharmacy

Pharmacies who provide these services are responsible for maintaining up-to-date service listings via healthdirect . You can also call your local pharmacy to ask if they are providing these services. 

Before you go:

  • check the pharmacy's opening hours
  • ask if you need to book a consultation and
  • ask about the cost of a consultation and medicine

More information

Pharmacies providing these services can choose to charge a consultation fee for the service. Medicines dispensed are not eligible for Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme subsidy.

If you, or someone in your family needs support in your language, tell the pharmacist you need an interpreter. You can also contact the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS) National  on 131 450. This service is free and confidential.
