Additional services from select pharmacies – information for pharmacists

​NSW Health has also authorised individual pharmacists who have successfully completed specified university-level training available through the Queensland University of Technology and James Cook University to provide treatment to eligible people for:​

  • Hormonal contraception resupply​
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI) management
  • Mild, acute musculoskeletal pain
  • Gastro-oesophageal reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD)
  • Allergic and non-allergic rhinitis

​Queensland-trained pharmacists offering these services must first complete the Intention to provide expanded community pharmacy services in NSW​ form. 

All services in NSW must be delivered in accordance with the relevant NSW Authorities Practice Standards.

Ph​armacist requirements​

Pharmacists who have successfully completed the specified ​university-level training available through the Queensland University of Technology and James Cook University, who intend to offer these services in NSW must complete Intention to provide expanded community pharmacy services in NSW form. The form must be resubmitted with updates if your details change (such as place of practice).

All pharmacists and pharmacies providing these services must meet the requirements of and operate in accordance with the relevant NSW Authorities and Practice Standards.

Please note, eligible pharmacists in NSW can offer services for urinary tract infection management, hormonal contraception resupply, and under the NSW Pharmacy Trial, minor skin condition management. Pharmacists who have completed the NSW-based training for these services do not need to complete the form before they commence practice.

Key requirements for pharmacists and pharmacies include:

  • Completing mandatory approved training (as listed in relevant Authorities)
  • Sharing a record of supply with the patient's usual treating medical practitioner or medical practice, where the patient has one, following consent by the patient. This must be shared within a week following the consultation
  • Appropriate private areas available to conduct consultations
  • Maintaining secure digital records of all consultations and their outcomes
  • Maintaining up-to-date service listings via the healthdirect, also known as the National Health Services Directory .​

Specific eligibility criteria are in place to ensure patients receive safe and appropriate care. These requirements are particular to each condition:

Creating and maintaining your service listing on healthdirect

Pharmacies who provide the service are responsible for maintaining their own up-to-date service listings via  the National Health Services Directory (NHSD).

First, check the healthdirect Service Finder to see if your pharmacy has already been listed with the NHSD.​

​If you have an existing listing, you can update this by clicking ‘suggest and edit’ and completing the service update form ​as required. Please select ‘Service offerings (pharmacies only)’ on the form to update any offerings available at your pharmacy.​

​If you do not have an existing listing, please follow the prompts on the healthdirect website to register an organisation, and nominate your intended service offerings.

Cost of​ service

Pharmacists can charge a consultation fee for patients seeking these services. This is at the discretion of the pharmacy.

This consultation fee will be in addition to the cost of any medicines supplied.
