Public Health Unit Checklist


Contact the patient and their doctor to:

  • Obtain patient’s travel history
  • Obtain patient’s risk exposure history
  • Obtain patient’s previous hepatitis A vaccination history
  • Identify likely source of infection
  • Confirm onset of symptoms (if any)
  • Confirm results of relevant pathology tests
  • Ensure that the patient is aware of diagnosis
  • Ensure that contact tracing has commenced
  • Refer contacts that have been exposed to the hepatitis A virus in the preceding 14 days for post-exposure prophylaxis

Contact the laboratory to:

  • Obtain any outstanding results
  • Ensure the sample is referred to the reference laboratory for PCR and genotyping​

Confirm case:

  • Assess information against case definition
