This section of the COVID-19 research and resource collection presents case studies from across NSW which highlight different approaches NSW Health teams took to innovate and adapt services, programs and ways of working in response to COVID-19.

The case studies were developed as part of a debrief on the NSW public health response to support learning from the pandemic and inform future public health emergency responses.

Case studies are categorised across six themes.

On this page

Communication and engagement

Effective communication and engagement strategies build trust and confidence in the government pandemic response, and support the community to understand and action necessary behavioural changes which help to control the spread of disease.

The following case studies describe examples of how NSW Health communicated and engaged with communities and clinical groups.

Outbreak management and response

The following case studies describe management and response to localised COVID-19 outbreaks in NSW across a range of settings.

Impact on population health services

The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in the disruption of many population-based prevention programs and services.

The following case studies describe the response to impacts on population health service and program delivery across four policy areas of health protection, preventative health, oral health and alcohol and other drugs.

Priority populations

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of priority population groups and settings in NSW required a more targeted public health response due to an increased risk of COVID-19 transmission and/or an increased risk of negative health outcomes following COVID-19 infection.

The following case studies describe various aspects of the public health response for Aboriginal people, culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, residential aged care facilities, correctional settings and educational settings.

Public health response

The following case studies provide examples of different activities implemented to support the public health response across NSW.

Data, systems and workforce

The following case studies describe the use of surveillance and information systems, data and workforce programs that were critical to supporting the public health response in NSW.
