NSW Health and the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health sector

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health and health-related organisations (ACCHOs) are incorporated Aboriginal organisations governed by the local Aboriginal community and responding to local needs.

The NSW Ministry of Health is committed to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal communities. Under a Ministerially Approved Grant program, we fund 41 ACCHOs to deliver culturally safe and tailored health services. These services include:

  • prevention and management of chronic disease
  • family health
  • oral health
  • maternal and infant health
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • drug and alcohol prevention and treatment.

ACCHOs are required to report to a set of NSW Key Performance Indicators (NSW KPIs) as well as a national Key Performance Indicator (nKPI) dataset. The nKPI data set is published annually and is available from Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of New South Wales

The Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council of New South Wales (AHMRC) is the representative body for Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services.

First established in 1995, the NSW Aboriginal Health Partnership Agreement between the AHMRC and NSW Health is vital for improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people in NSW. The agreement aims to ensure that the expertise and experience of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector is brought to the health care processes of NSW Health.
