Local health services

Each local health district (LHD) across NSW Health plays a vital role in improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people. LHDs aim to deliver culturally safe, accessible and responsive healthcare services, working in partnership with local Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations to meet community needs.

Statewide or specialised services

  • Aboriginal Maternal and Infant Health Services (AMIHS) support pregnant women, their families and community.
  • Aboriginal Immunisation Health Worker Program and other initiatives help improve vaccination rates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.
  • NSW Aboriginal Ear Health Program helps prevent otitis media (middle ear infection) in Aboriginal children aged 0 to 6 years.
  • NSW Aboriginal Knockout Health Challenge (KHC) is a community-led healthy lifestyle program for Aboriginal people in NSW. The KHC links participants with health service and supports teams to run initiatives that promote being active and eating well.
  • Get Healthy Service is an evidence-based, free phone and online health coaching program. People over 16 years of age can receive support to eat healthy, be physically active, reach and stay a healthy weight and drink less alcohol. An Aboriginal workforce is available to support community and deliver a culturally safe experience. This includes an Aboriginal intake specialist, male and female Aboriginal health coaches and an Aboriginal community engagement lead.
  • Aboriginal Go4Fun is a free community-based healthy lifestyle program for Aboriginal children aged 7 to 13, and their families. Run by trained health and community professionals and delivered in partnership with local Aboriginal organisations, it’s a fun way to build self-esteem and learn about eating well, staying active and living a healthy life.
  • Get Healthy in Pregnancy is a free, evidence-based phone and online health coaching program for Aboriginal women in NSW. Qualified Aboriginal health coaches support women to eat healthy, be physically active, achieve and maintain a healthy weight and avoid alcohol in pregnancy. Women can choose a brief intervention or schedule regular coaching calls at a time that suits them, with access to on-demand resources and online chat. Women who smoke are offered a referral to Quitline, which offers a culturally safe service for Aboriginal callers using Aboriginal counsellors.
  • End of life and palliative care for the Aboriginal community can be provided by skilled Aboriginal Health Workers. Their approach supports cultural safety, diversity, self-determination and autonomy.
  • Justice Health NSW supports Aboriginal patients, families, and communities through culturally safe, trauma‑informed health programs designed for people in custody.
