Contamination of surfaces response protocol for public swimming pools and spa pools

Hard surfaces within public swimming pools and spa pools may become contaminated with faeces, vomit or blood, or with water of poor quality that has been contaminated by such substances.

Recommended remedial steps

  1. Restrict access to the affected area.
Remove all visible contamination with disposable cleaning products and dispose of them appropriately.
  2. Disinfect the affected area using a chlorine solution of one part bleach to 10 parts water. This dilution factor is based on a bleach product containing 10-12.5% sodium hypochlorite. Apply liberally and leave to soak for 10 minutes before mopping up.
  3. Record the incident and remedial action taken.
  4. Re-open the affected area.
