South Western Sydney Local Health District

South Western Sydney Local Health DistrictThis projected evaluated the introduction of intra cavitary electrocardiography (IC ECG) for the insertion of central venous access devices (CVADs) by a nurse-led central venous access service (CVAS) as a safer and more efficient alternative to current central venous access.

344 patients were enrolled to either IC-ECG or traditional CVAD insertion. No further intervention was required in 170/172 (99%) of IC ECG compared to 139/172 (81%) of traditionally inserted CVADs.

This collaborative approach between clinicians, researchers and local decision makers has culminated in substantial patient safety and organisational benefits.
