NSW Health acknowledges Aboriginal people as the traditional custodians of the lands and waters of NSW and pays respect to Elders past and present. Their continuous connection to Country is a testament to knowledge systems that have flourished for thousands of years, centred in storytelling, wisdom and deep care for community.
Aboriginal cultures embrace principles of balance, respect and shared leadership. They recognise the roles of all people – women, men and gender-diverse people – as knowledge holders, protectors and custodians. As we work towards greater gender equality today, we reflect on the strength of these traditions and the lessons they offer.
In this plan, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are referred to as Aboriginal people in recognition that Aboriginal people are the original inhabitants of NSW.
