The Intersection of Value Based Healthcare and Environmental Sustainability

Abstract: High value health care is low carbon health care. As we face the unprecedented challenge of climate change, we must consider ways to reduce the health sector’s significant carbon footprint. While actions such as reducing emissions through hospitals’ electricity are essential, it is clear that changes to models of clinical care are also needed, with low value care contributing to waste and poorer outcomes and experiences.

This is where two key challenges to health system sustainability – value based healthcare and climate risk – interest and why better value, low carbon emissions models of care are urgently needed. The session provides an overview of the environmental sustainability reforms required and explore the links with value based healthcare.

It features case studies to show how particular streams of work are contributing to the reduction in the carbon footprint of healthcare, including how NSW Health’s Virtual Care Strategy is embedding options for virtual care in service delivery that play a valuable role in the transition to a net carbon-zero healthcare system.
