Transcript of: International Day of the Midwife 2023

Midwife - The best part about being a midwife is the relationships and connections that you form with the women.

Midwife – And being there as they welcome their child into the world is fantastic.

Jacqui Cross, Chief Nursing and Midwifery Officer, NSW Health - Oh, midwives most definitely have a special job and they love, absolutely love what they do. And I can't think of anything more special than being with a family and a woman as they go through such an important time in their lives and their focus really is about women-centred care.

Midwife - I may cry at most births, but yeah, being a midwife is really special.

Jacqui Cross - Midwives have an absolute focus on the woman and the baby, and you know, I think that's what makes midwives incredibly special. I often say, the thing about midwives that I love the most is their passion.

Midwife - So, it wasn't until I had my own baby that I saw the impact that midwifery had.

Midwife - Just being there at the birth, being there with the woman and her family and just, it's a privilege to be with her.

Jacqui Cross - I think for midwives that the real, kind of the struggles that they had, particularly during COVID and recent times, is that connection to not only the women but also to their families and that broader community, and the way that they support each other as well, we were all challenged during that time and our midwives really had to think of new, innovative ways of engaging, and I think that takes absolute commitment.

Midwife - Good morning.

Midwife - I can kind of feel a little bottom because the whole back moves when I do it.

Midwife - All right, well, I'll leave you to change him and feed him and I will catch up with you tomorrow.

Jacqui Cross - So, to all of the midwives of NSW, I really want to say thank you so much for your care, your passion, and your commitment. So, Happy International Day of the Midwife.

Midwife - Hey, buddy. She's very relaxed.
