What are Suicide Prevention Outreach Teams (SPOT)?

Suicide Prevention Outreach Teams (SPOT) help people who are experiencing a crisis, suicidal distress or at risk of self-harm.

SPOT is a mobile service that can come to you. They can come to a place where you are comfortable receiving support. You can talk to a peer worker who has experience with suicide or to a mental health clinician.

They can help you with:

  • safety planning
  • connecting with ongoing local mental health supports
  • recovery and wellness planning
  • supporting you to connect with community and social services.

How to get help from SPOT

You can get help by calling the SPOT service nearest to you or getting a referral from your GP / doctor or local community health centre.

You can also contact the Mental Health Line on 1800 011 511, where a trained mental health professional will ask you questions about your mental health needs. They will then refer you to the appropriate service.

Learn more about SPOT

Suicide Prevention Outreach Teams (SPOT) have been set up across NSW to better serve at-risk people in the community where they live.

The SPOT initiative seeks to

  • help more people, more quickly, in familiar and comfortable environments
  • keep people in their communities with appropriate support systems and care pathways
  • ease demand on hospital emergency departments by enabling coordinated admissions to appropriate mental health services
  • contribute to reducing self-harm, suicide attempts and deaths by suicide.

This initiative has been developed from innovative and needs-based models, designed with the help of experts in the field including those with lived experience of suicide. InsideOut Institute and Roses in the Ocean have provided implementation and training support for the SPOT initiative.
