Advice for international applicants
All doctors working in New South Wales must be registered with the Medical Board of Australia (MBA). There are different types of registration categories available that are determined by a registrants level of training, level of experience and where medical qualifications were obtained. Most doctors have general registration but there are specific categories for specialist, medical students, interns and international medical graduates (IMGs).
International medical graduates (IMGs) are eligible for general registration if they have obtained the Australian Medical Council (AMC) certificate via either the AMC examination process (Standard Pathway) or the Competent Authority Pathway and undertaken a period of supervised training in accordance with the Medical Board of Australia's registration standard.
The Standard Pathway is for non-specialist IMGs seeking general registration in Australia who do not qualify for the Competent Authority Pathway. It has two pathways: Standard Pathway (AMC examinations) and Standard Pathway (workplace-based assessment). Hunter New England Local Health District in NSW is one of the AMC accredited workplace based assessment program providers.
An applicant is eligible to apply to the AMC as an overseas trained specialist under the Specialist Pathway if they can meet the eligibility criteria set out in the Applying to the Australian Medical Council Booklet. At the conclusion of the specialist assessment process, successful applicants will be eligible to present to the MBA for registration to practice as a specialist in the assessed specialty only.
IMGs not eligible for general or specialist registration are eligible to apply for limited registration with the MBA. To be eligible for limited registration IMGs must possess a primary degree in medicine and surgery from one of the medical schools listed in the current online version of the International Medical Education Directory (IMED)of the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research or other AMC approved publication. An application for limited registration can only be made after the IMG has received an offer of employment.

English Language Requirements
All IMGs must demonstrate that they have the necessary English language skills for registration purposes.

Area of Need
The Area of Need Program is an initiative of NSW Health, and is a strategy assisting in the temporary provision of general practice and specialist medical services to locations in NSW which have limited access to these services. Eligible employers are able to recruit suitably qualified international medical graduates to vacant positions that have been given Area of Need status by the NSW Department of Health. Panel of Overseas Recruitment Agencies (PORA)
All IMGs located outside of Australia who are recruited via a recruitment agency into NSW Health will be recruited via one of the agencies currently on the PORA.
