I am delighted that once again it is time for the dedication and work of the nurses and midwives of NSW Health to be acknowledged by the annual Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery Awards.

This awards initiative has become an integral part of the state-wide nursing and midwifery calendar, culminating in a ceremony at NSW Parliament House, hosted by the Hon Jillian Skinner, Minister for Health, where finalists and winners come together to celebrate their achievements with family, friends and colleagues.

Our nurses and midwives are the front line of patient care: the hands and feet, the eyes and ears of the health care team. They are teachers, care coordinators and advocates whose clinical judgment helps positively steer the course of our patients' health care. Our nurses' and midwives' loyalty, expertise, compassion and hard work are the cornerstone that makes our health environment one of the best in the world.

These awards recognise nurses and midwives for their excellence in practice and for the significant contribution that they make to their professions, their teams and the community through their practice, leadership and research endeavours.

In 2014 we introduced the Consumer Appreciation Award. This category is open to members of the public who wish to acknowledge and recognise the nurses and midwives who have demonstrated outstanding patient care and those who have worked in collaborative partnerships to achieve improved outcomes and support to families and carers.

Nominations have now closed
