Nominations

Transcranial magnetic stimulation for the treatment of psychiatric disorders

In 2016, a nomination was received for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for the treatment of psychiatric disorders.

Actions

  • The Committee commissioned an evidence review to better understand the benefits and risks of TMS. The report showed:
    • TMS may be a safe and effective intervention for psychiatric disorders
    • there was considerable variability in the evidence-base, particularly around patient selection which affected the applicability of findings to patients generally treated by NSW Health.
  • The Committee advised chief executives of all districts and networks that TMS should continue to be delivered under a research framework until additional evidence around patient selection criteria is available.
