UTS Futures Thinking course for health professionals

The University of Technology Sydney (UTS) supported NSW Health staff to use futures thinking to prepare for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. 51 participants from 24 health agencies across the state came together for a Futures Thinking Course to build their futures literacy and practice futures thinking methods.

The course marks the beginning of a broader journey to embed futures thinking into the culture of NSW Health. Instead of a one-off course, the program was designed to provide participants with the foundation for an ongoing community of practice.

Post-course support will be key to sustaining momentum and includes six live online sessions and individual coaching to help participants to overcome challenges they may face when trying to apply futures thinking in their specific work context.

Read about how the interactive sessions helped participants, and learn more about the course on the University of Technology website.

Workforce Accelerator

The Workforce Accelerator tackles complex workforce challenges with future-focused solutions through collaborative, human-centered workshops. By focusing on human-centered design and leveraging evidence-based, innovative practices, diverse leaders rapidly ideate and develop action plans to drive change at an accelerated pace. These plans are designed to attract, retain, and develop the NSW Health workforce needed for the future, ultimately enhancing patient access and care.

To be considered for a Workforce Accelerator, the following principles should be met:

  • Focus on workforce-related challenges.
  • Emphasis on patient-centred opportunities.
  • An environment ready for change.
  • Willingness to experiment and pilot new approaches.
  • Adequate resources, leadership, and support for implementation.
  • The solution can be formed into an action plan and implemented.

Futures Musters

Futures Musters workshops are a key to the Focus on the Future Workforce Initiative. Futures Musters engages current and emerging leaders across the NSW health system and facilitates a creative space to think curiously and innovatively about the future of work and the NSW Health workforce.

We have hosted 13 Futures Musters since 2019. The workshop topics are chosen to support future thinking and strategic planning for the NSW Health workforce. Past topics include technology and scientific innovation, consumer-led care and population changes. We are currently designing new Futures Musters by working with stakeholders to identify topics that support readiness in our current and future workforce.

Leading for Innovation

Innovation is always emerging across NSW Health as we imagine new and better ways to deliver patient care. Our challenge is to create and support a culture and infrastructure that enables ongoing innovation.

Leading for Innovation (L4I) is a leadership development program aimed at enhancing knowledge, skills, mindsets and actions to nurture innovation and leadership capabilities within the NSW Health workforce.

Using a flipped classroom approach, L4I engages talented leaders in an immersive learning experience to cultivate 16 innovation and leadership skills and instincts through a mix of learning formats including workshops, online self-directed learnings, group work and coaching.

L4I equips participants with new ways of thinking, tools to engage with people, how to generate insights, how to help break barriers, and how to apply out-of-the-box thinking for challenging situations.

If you want to know more about the L4I program or to register your interest in participating, contact us at: MOH-WorkforceHorizonsScanning@health.nsw.gov.au
