The influenza season in NSW was one of the most severe seasons since the 2009 pandemic, with high influenza activity extending for more than three months, and with a record high peak in mid-August due to concurrent peaks in influenza A and B strain activity:

  • the influenza season commenced earlier than usual in early June, and influenza activity in the community was elevated well into October. Over 103,000 cases of influenza were reported including 654 deaths
  • 591 influenza outbreaks were reported in institutions.
