The Public Health Act 2010 requires private water suppliers and water carters to have a drinking water quality assurance program. Highlights included:

  • amendment of the Act to include:
    • offence provisions for not having, complying with or providing a copy of a quality assurance program to NSW Health
    • private water suppliers and water carters among the responsibilities of local government. This allows a local council to exercise powers with private suppliers and water carters, where the council has the capacity and improve efficiency where councils are already exercising regulatory responsibility with these businesses, for example in relation to a food business or onsite wastewater management.
  • development of guidance for Public Health Units and councils in assessing private water supply risks as part of a food inspection.
